How did you find bananas for a banana skirt?
That dance costume must withstand rigorous body movement, the plastic or polystyrene bananas found in novelty bargain stores were not going to hold together. I had to make each banana by hand in materials that were light and malleable enough to support the dance. It took a few trial runs before I worked out the best way to make one. Once approved in colour, size and shape, the required materials were then purchased and it was all a Go-Go, banana making, stuffing and stitching together.
It took nearly 50 bananas all lined along side each other to cover the waistband.
Maya provided a bra and some special silver adornments and I covered it with silver sequins before adding the supplied embellishments. I even replaced the original bra straps so they would still be stretchy and silver. We could have used an expensive diamonte covered band, but Maya already had a stretchy belt alternative that was ready made, it fit over the bananas and suited the dance costume perfectly.
