Agent Costume had a lot of fun creating this stingray dance costume long distance for a dancer in Melbourne. I mean, how often do you think I get asked to design stingray eyes on a hoodie?
I can tell you, in my experience, only once, and here are the results.

Her mother emailed the requested measurements and a sketch the clever stingray was able to draw. It was a good drawing, showing needed dimensions, tail length, wing length etc that i needed to get started.

In the end, I made the wings to about the knee, as I didn’t know how long her legs were and thought it would be a safer bet given we didn’t have a fitting. The original email request was for wings to the waist but then we decided the wings would look better longer.
Also, a persons head is a little bit different shape from the stetch so the eyes are against the head rather than on top. It took a bit of thought, but in the end I found a perfect shaped shoulder pad to cover for the eyes! and used buttons for pupils. Ingenious.
Thankfully I have the best kind of stretch fabric machinery to get the job done professionally.
My trusty industrial 4 thread over locker and industrial cover stitch machine. They are awesome to use to make Dancewear.

To guarantee a costume fitting perfectly, We need to have a fitting, but because the client lives so far away, we had to make sure I got all the necessary measurements were made correctly.
Sometimes people will not take the measurements in the right place, taking the waist and hip measurements according to where the fashion of the time indicates – which those of us who’ve been here a while know, changes regularly.
The true waist and hip will be at different heights for different body shapes, but this is a discussion for another time.
Because the costume was made out of a two way stretch there is a larger margin for error than if the costume was to be well fitted and made out of non stretch.

All in all, I think a satisfactory result given it was all communicated over the Internet and phone!
