So then, who are you going to be?

There are many different characters and roles involved in a circus theme so where to start?
Well, they say the circus started in Rome with animal trainers and performers. They say Gypsies carried on the entertaining tradition, travelling with their show and entertaining from town to town across Europe. The nature of the Circus has changed and evolved over the years, but there are some pretty well recognised characters that most people in this modern day can recognise and even identify with.

Some Circus costume ideas available at Agent Costume

  • Ringmaster: hosts the show, introduces the acts and keeps the show rolling. Attired in a military fashion, exudes authority, often doubles as a lion tamer and carries a whip. Tail coat (often red but can be any colour of your choosing), Top hat, jodhpurs, big black boots.
  • Aerialists and Trapeze artists: colourful leotards, swing from tissues and swings
  • Clowns: clowns can be bright or colourful, clowns can emulate other performers and bring laughter to the serious nature of some of the other acts.
An easy way to DIY (do it yourself) clown is to wear clothes that don’t fit (too big and too small), and..paint your face.
  • Magician: Top hat, white rabbit, white gloves, magic wand often dressed in black and red, curly moustache and a twinkle in your eye.
  • Beautiful assistant: long legs, blow waved hair, high heels, tiny little steps and a big broad smile. Elegant presenting hands.
  • Knife thrower: can be dressed like a gypsy. Puffy white shirt, vest with gold braid, a sash around the waist and dangling down the side, puffy pants tucked into boots, or black dress pants. Maybe a little unshaven- or paint on a beard, greasy hair, a scarf tied around the head-knotted in the back and hanging down like a pirate, a hat on top, one gold hoop earring.
  • Knife thrower’s assistant: May also be a beautiful gypsy, or can be a more modern beautifully made up, corset, frilled skirt, fingerless gloves, feathers in the hair, piled up in curls and ringlets hanging down.
  • Strongman: red and white stripy singlet, leopard shorts ripped at the knee, brown fur over one shoulder leather belt around the waist, leather wrist cuffs and dumbbells, bald head, strapped sandals,
    or
black singlet leotard, leopard print over one shoulder, leather belt, slicked back hair with side part, curly moustache and rosy cheeks- yep, dip into the blush and pink up those cheeks!
  • Equestrian show pony rider: fancy corset, ostrich plumage on the head, wrist cuffs, shiny lips
  • Lion tamer: or animal trainer- bears, monkeys, panthers, tigers
  • Lion! or any other magnificent circus creature, Bear, Elephant, Horse, Panther
  • Fortune teller: Exotic, from the east, bearing dramatic prophecy. You could be an Eastern European gyspsy, or you cold be a great talent from temples of India!
  • Exotic Snake charmer
  • Illustrated Lady/Man: covered in tattoos
  • Bearded Lady
  • Conjoined Twins
  • Exotic cultures: Circuses often displayed the amazing pygmies, or other tribal cultures with tattoos and “odd” clothing of grass skirts and bones in the nose.
  • Dare Devil: Rides a motorcycle in a cage and makes impressive jumps
  • There are plenty more options than we have managed to photograph here, this is just a taste of what we are able to create with you, so make a time to drop in and see how we can best fit you out.
