I got a call from PR company FreePublicity who had ordered some costumes online to use for a promotional purpose.
The costumes had arrived in time, but were cheaply made and were not up to the standard they needed them to be.
“Can you re-inforce them with foam, so that they don’t flop the way they do, and also cover the backs with fabric so that the people wearing them can’t be seen from any angle?”
It’s hard to know what do do without seeing the costumes first hand, so they had them couriered to Agent Costume Headquarters in Bondi. They needed them finished by the next few days and time was of the essence.

The costumes arrived crumpled and in their packaging.
They had to be ironed carefully to flatten out the creases and not melt the paint or soft foam.
To start with, a firm foam is not cheap. To order and get it delivered would cost over two hundred dollars before we even got started. The glue required would also be another expense, not to mention the time and hands needed to line it all up and press it in place etc.
After a bit of thought, the answer arrived. It was not anything I had tried before, but I knew it would work, the materials would be lot cheaper, and I wouldn’t have to consider dealing with glue fumes and drying space.
After re-searching stockist and costs, the materials were purchased, the reinforcing material, and black lycra for the backs of the costumes, other bits and peices, then spent the next few days or so cutting and sewing the adjustments in place.
I was very pleased with the result, it turned out better than i expected and everyone was happy.
YaY! Another successful mission.
I get a lot of referrals from people who just can’t work it out.
It’s these kind of jobs, the ones that challenge and inspire new ways of thinking which are the most satisfying to complete in the end.
