Costuming on my day off

I just recently met some lovely uni students, they are studying different aspects of media, and part of their curriculum has them make a documentary together. They have picked a subject, researched people who are related to this subject and found me while searching the net.
Today is Sunday and a perfect day for them to come and film aspects of what I do and weave it into their documentary.

They were so lovely, they brought amazing food for lunch and even left some which was so thoughtful, unexpected, and really appreciated.
It’s clear they all come from stable loving family environments, and I feel enlivened by their company. It’s the simple things in life isn’t it. It’s all so natural to them and goes without saying because that’s been their normal experience, loving caring people around them.
I realise how MUCH I miss my family environment, and those types of loving caring people.
Too often the people around us look mainly out for themselves and then we all find ourselves dropping our standards and doing it. Being…self serving.
I’ve just been reminded to lift my standards again!

but that’s not why I’m here! I have a different story to tell today.

So I was tidying up after those beautiful girls had left, and was re-sorting my costumes and haberdashery when someone knocked on the door.
“Hey! are you open today? I live down the road, I saw your door was open, I need a costume, Do you have a Micki and Mini mouse?”

Oh no! I Thought, I don’t, I need to think of something…
“When do you need it?”

“next Saturday”

“No…I…don’t…”

“Oh ok, that’s fine.” and he began to walk off.

Wait! “What’s the theme?”

“It’s an M theme” he said pausing and waiting to hear why I’d asked.

And then a conversation started around that I could turn him into a mouse, just not particularly Mickey, and did he need to be a mouse, or perhaps we could think of something else?
“To be honest,” he said “I don’t even want to dress up, but it’s a special party for a family member so I have to make an effort”

“well, lets go and have a look at the collection and see if something can trigger another idea”

So we looked through, Marilyn Monroe, or perhaps he could be Mat the Cowboy? Or Mark the construction worker?….
or an American Indian…with, with a Mohawk!

oooohhhhh getting closer…I was thinking surely there’s an Indian name starting with eM…em,em,em, the mohawk was in the window and we walked around to take a look, “see! it’s a cool feathered mohawk isn’t it!”

mmmmmm…mmmmmm…mm.MOHICAN!

“The Last of the Mohicans! You can be Mohicans!” I exclaimed with utter jubilance.
YES!
I felt like I had won something.

“I like where this is going!” he said

I was so happy.

So we picked out an outfit for his lady with accessories, and then we sorted out his costume.
We shortened the leather chaps in a way that I could lengthen them again when he returned them, and put another hole in the belt so that they would sit where they needed to on his waist. Totally customised costuming on the spot. Awesome.
we picked out armbands and necklaces and then we were done.

“Hey! I’m really excited about wearing this!” he said. “This is going to be really cool”

[box]YES! again. I LOVE it when people turn around and change their minds about costume parties from apprehension to excitement![/box]

YES! again. I LOVE it when people turn around and change their minds about costume parties from apprehension to excitement.
Really the main reason why some people don’t like costumes parties is because they are too busy to really sit around and work out an awesome costume for themselves that’s going to look great and represent them in a way they feel is appropriate and accurate and stylish.
Most people don’t want to look silly.
Well of course you want to walk into a room and have other people say “oh yeah, that person looks really cool, they just got it so right.”

well, that’s why you give me a call.
I have accessories you don’t even know exist! How do i know?
Because i make them up myself! You can’t buy them on the web! you probably couldn’t even afford to purchase them! and if you can, then come and have a look and find something original to keep in your wardrobe.

I’m guided by years of experience and research and note taking. I think about this stuff E.V.E.R.Y.D.A.Y. of my life.
It’s my job.
and I love nothing better than to free up time so I can make up what I feel like.

And to be honest, my fringed leather concoction is rather rock star.
Grown men love wearing it.
and Chicks dig it.

I’ve got two more leather cowboys too, in-case you need to dress up with friends. Sometimes going in groups can lessen the apprehension caused by the thought “what if other people don’t end up dressing up?”

So, when’s your next dress up occassion?
Make an appointment, come in and find something to play in.

Playing dress ups is fun!

Just ask the last of the Mohicans if you see him out and about next weekend.
