It’s not often one gets the request to make a custom made super hero costume for a common variety Garden Gnome.
“Listen mate,” he said, “I’m going to a super hero costume party for me fairy mate Giselda’s 568th birthday, and I need an outfit”
“Is this some kind of a joke?”
“Nah mate, I’m deadly serious, and I need it by Tuesday”
It was friday, and I had my weekend booked up. Was I willing to spend my extra spare time during the night to dress a Garden Gnome up as a Super Hero?
“I’ll do it! when can you come in for a fitting?”
Now here’s the thing, (back in the real world) the gnome hadn’t even been chosen yet. And I wasn’t going to see him until Monday afternoon. WHoooooWheeeee.
When I got to see him, he was a different gnome to the picture i was sent. In fact, he was rather worse for wear and needed an extreme makeover.
Before the extreme make over
“We need him back in the morning so he can be painted”
So from two evenings set aside for the job, I was down to one evening to get it right.
Game on!
[insert the busy bumblebee music here]
I got as far as I could, and they picked him up. Of course he wasn’t all properly stuck down, but the suit was there and after he was painted, i figured they could stick him all together as i imagined.
Day 1, before the paint job
During the day i got the call:
“we need some changes.”
I was expecting this.
“his cape needs to fly in the breeze” that would have been handy to know from the beginning, as I would have chosen a different fabric and cut to begin with.
His boots need changing
His mask needs to be another colour
It needs to be tighter.
So, in he came, all spruced up looking very spiffy with some lovely new colour in his cheeks, and new shiny red boots! I’m sure I detected a twinkle in his eye.
And away I went…[more bumblebee music]
A few hours later,
and Ualla!
A brand spanking new Super Hero Gnome at your service!

“Thank you so much!” he said “Me mates aren’t gonna believe their eyes when they see me! I’ll send me Leprechaun mate Lochi in! He needs a new hat and some shiny new gold boot laces”
