My name is Elisa. I’ve been sewing for over 15 years. I make costumes, and sew sets, and will liase with model makers, metal workers, suitmakers, sign writers etc, if it means getting you the fabric construction job you need. Working in well established and respected production companies such as Opera Australia, Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, and numerous film, TV and theatre productions has helped to more finely hone my costuming skills.
Nothing quite beats the thrill of watching something come together in front you with your own two hands! And nothing is quite as satisfying as watching somebody enjoy their life, party or performance, wearing something that was made with special effort, consideration and care.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the past, personally dressing up to take on different aspects of different characters and find that with more experience and practice, the less self conscious one tends to feel. I’ve even caught the bus in various get ups just to test myself! Playing dress ups can help a person to lead a more….varied life. Variety is the spice of life they say!
It’s amazing how differently people treat you depending on what you’re wearing, and how you feel wearing particular things. It’s also surprising the way you can find yourself responding freely to the way people approach you. The space that people hold for you has an effect on your experience of life. It makes me happy to see people who are unafraid to express themselves with interesting clothing.
Often I meet women who have not felt encouraged to feel free with their sense of dress, even though they want to so much. You can see it on their faces as they say “Oh! I wish I was brave enough to wear that!” and they mean it! Come On! Let’s face it, it can be so much fun!
No one wants to be laughed at or be made fun of. We all want to be respected and to fit in. When we see others truly comfortable within themselves no matter the sometimes ridiculous exterior, it can become apparent how much we sensor ourselves and suppress that carefree spark that brings a sense of fun to otherwise bland ways of being.
Sometimes all you need is a little encouragement. Some people are still so scared of wearing what they want to wear it’s frightening. I’d rather be scared of spiders! Clothing is an important, and necessary, functional, daily requirement. Why wouldn’t you pay more attention to presentation? And why not have more care for the energy put behind it? It would make me very happy to see more people embracing a more costume style approach with everyday wear. We choose who we are in every moment of everyday in our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. Why not get creative with it?
Take it to the streets people! What’s the next best thing to dressing up in everyday life? Fancy Dress Parties! What better way to really throw yourself in the deep end and experiment with experiencing different character traits? It’s the perfect environment to try new ways of being without your friends and acquaintances saying or thinking: “what’s gotten into you? You’re not being yourself!”
Who ever yourself is anyway? I’ll let you in on a little secret: You are and always will be who ever you choose to be in any given moment. So come on! Let’s play dress ups! After all, we may be whom ever we please! Tell us your basic requirements, and we’ll get back to you with a quote. Measurements, or basic size, time frame, budget.
