How’s this for a ripping party theme? “Cult Fiction” and guess who the host wanted to dress up as?
Someone important, someone powerful, someone so far from his own personality it would be shockingly hilarious.
He chose to be a King for his birthday, King Joffery in fact from the popular series “Game of Thrones.”
Ohhhhhh noooooooo!
Anyone who’s seen the episodes or read the books knows what a diabolically frightening character he is. I had to get past my own prejudices and concentrate on the line of his outfit. He is dressed rather superbly after all with a medieval style. It helped to see the client was nothing like this character, which was part of the fun after all.
The costumes for the show “Game of Thrones” are built using the finest materials and a team of costume makers, the outfits can run into the thousands to make, do you think the general party maker has thousands to spend on a costume for one night of fun? I can tell you, generally speaking, the answer is quite simply “no.”
So how do we work out a price and style thats going to work, look smart, and fit the pocket? We sit down, have a chat, and come up with some ideas. Preferences are shared and if the client likes what I come up with for the budget, then we go ahead and make it!
The budget didn’t extend to making a crown, but he had a crafty friend who offered to make the one you see in the photo.

In this case, I created an outfit and hired it for a price less than it took to make, with the confidence I’ll be able to make my wage back with future hires.
Cutting out King Joffery costume
One issue with this outfit is that although the fabric looks a perfect combination of regal and lethal, it’s not a very hardy material. The suit is going to have to be dry cleaned, and may only last 6 hires before it loses it’s edge. Until then, it has a few good wears in it, as long as it’s taken good care of.
Better make the most of it.
