It’s not everyday a person with a camera says “I have a studio, models, make up artists, I want to shoot some costumes” It’s going to be a busy day apparently, with him cramming as much as he can in one day, so somewhere in there I’m hoping to get three good costume shots that I can use for my purposes. People respond to beautiful imagery, so that’s the aim, to get some.
He’s a friend (of a good friend) so i was willing to let him borrow some things to enable him to create more images for his portfolio in return for me using the photos, but after some thought I remembered, I have lent costumes to people in the past for this purpose, only to be left with photos I can not use. The styling was poor to no existent, or they only shot the face and not the whole costume for me etc. I mean, you can’t just “put the thing on” you have to tweak it to fit the person wearing it, add a flash of something unexpected or new to feed the viewer with, they should be hungry to explore your image.
I know beautiful photography captures me, with questions that spring to mind, like “how?”
Like I said, people respond to beautiful imagery, they also have adverse reactions to poorly executed shots and in this day and age we are saturated by high quality imagery, the bar is high. I’m feeling excited about the possibilities.
Because the models are also volunteering to get themselves shots, I imagine they are starting out, and their comfort zone may likely be less than a seasoned pro who’s also getting paid for the day, so, there’s room for some role play, they can help me build their character- within the confines of what I’m able to carry.
When I dress people who come into my space, I let them guide me.
They know what they like and what they are comfortable with, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that and all of a sudden we hit upon the perfect combination, I pack it all up and they have their costume of the night.
For this shoot, I haven’t seen or fitted the models, so I’m guessing, and even though I’m only taking a couple of costumes, the winning combination could be a variation of combinations, one outfit doesn’t suit all body types, and I’d love the model to be able to bring something of themselves through to sell it. for them to say “I OWN this” with their eyes.
so, I’ve packed about 5 costume combinations, with a truckload of accessories- this hat? this wig?this jewellery or that?
And I’m taking my kit with lint brushes, double sided tape, pins, clips, brushes..etc
It took me hours to put them together. and it takes something to put them on together in a captivating way, so I figured I may as well bring them along and style them too.
Wish me luck!
