Costume Party Theme: Dress as you wouldn’t be seen in Public!

I had a funny conversation recently with a customer. He was going to a Studio 54 party and getting some tips on how to be Lou Reed – but that’a another story…
He was telling me that the week before, he’d been to a party where the theme was something like “I wouldn’t be seen in public like this”

Costume theme: “I wouldn’t be see like this in public!”

What a great idea, it really opens a can of worms right? I mean, finally the chance to share with all your friends the person you’ve been hiding all this time! or not.
This guy said “We all thought it was a great idea, and unusual, but at the end of the day most of us felt a bit weird because we were wearing these strange things!”
I laughed out loud. How funny!
I think back in time to all the parties we’ve shared with friends, the different vibes each celebration takes on, it’s all experiences we can look back to and laugh on. Not ALL parties have to be the “be all and end all” of all we thought we knew about parties. Some parties are weird, or quirky, and they are all experiences shared by friends and add to the joy and colour and investigations of ourselves on this amazing planet.

This customer I was talking to had decided to dress as a white goods supply store manager, complete with name badge and combed over dorky fringe, and after his main entrance and first half hour of the party, he just kept thinking about how he wanted to get changed “that’s not party clothes!” he said.

And it’s true! It’s funny to take a theme to an unexpected direction, but at the same time, you will be emulating this character you create, people will be relating to you as this character, and you will be stuck in it all night! So unless it’s something you’re willing to stick with the whole way through, then pick something else to wear.
Although, having said that, it might not be so hard to stick with if you know the reactions you are going to cause in your friends. Lets face it, most of our friends think they know us, if we can show them something they never expected in us it can cause a lot laughter and back slapping fun.

where do i start with ideas for this costume theme?

  • You could start by imagining the most fantastical clothes you’ve always wanted to wear. Perhaps you DO wear them but only behind closed doors in the privacy of your own home. Heh heh, could be pretty funny.
or perhaps in this case you are suggesting to your friends that this is how you privately carry yourself?
  • Maybe there is a look you can not stand? I do not recommend taking this course of action, because if you don’t like how it looks on other people, chances are, you wont enjoy wearing them either.
  • Sometimes there are outfits we love but don’t feel comfortable leaving the house in because they attract more attention than we’re used to, or don’t feel we can carry this look off. Well, now’s your chance to test it out. Who knows? This party could be the beginning of your new self!

When picking a costume think about the setting or venue, think about the other guests, what kind of party is it? Ask the host which direction the theming is going. Sometimes it’s a fun family home made affair, sometimes it’s a bit of a risque night out where people can afford to really push their creative boundaries.
At the end of the day, who you are is going to carry you through any event, regardless of what you may or may not be wearing. For those of us not yet masters of our own selves…clothing helps.
