Optus promotion at the Rhianna Concert 2011

My job was to design costumes for both men and women and then make them in time for the Rihanna Last Girl on Earth, Australian concert tour.

I was given the company colours and the logo graphic.

Designs went back and forth until I came up with a design that matched the clients aesthetic.

Then away I went.
Fabric sourcing, pattern making, cutting and making, leggings, ripped leggings, lycra dresses and mens pants with buckles and straps.

The costume design illustration is really only a guide.
One thing that many people do not realise is, what works flat on paper, may not work the same way in 3D.

My illustration was drawn with a particular budget in mind, and to keep the price low, I designed a silver detail that was to be sewn in the shoulder, like a crushed rock looking foil type fabric.
The result was not quite as spacey looking as a sharp slice of silver, and so amendments were made mid construction process.
It’s all part of the game, and sometimes that’s just what it takes to keep the look. The new look shoulder added several hours to the final garment construction total, but had a more slick streamlined effect than the bunched silver foil look.

The wigs were purchased by the agency themselves.

I would have liked to spice them up a bit, give them a bit of special treatment once they have been taken out of the bag, make them look fresh, and perhaps add some kind of silver/yellow/black sparkle, but sometimes these things work best when they are intuitivley guided, and to plan, illustrate and explain can add time to an already stretched budget.

They look pretty cool though, these costumes were quite involved.
